The subject area of Interactive Media at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Designdeals with the conceptual, communication-specific and technical design of interactive and interconnected media and offers an innovative specialization with the masters course “interactive information design”. Here new forms of presentation and visualization are being studied and created in order to make the growing demand for information accessible in a communicative and innovative way. In this framework the designer has responsible tasks in mediation. He has to model data according to the classical model of Flusser, often to understand complex relations and topics himself and to distinguish the essential from the incidental without trivializing. At the same time, the technological framework conditions are subject to continuous change. This process can only be shaped if a comprehensive media competence enables the assessment of developments. Apart from building on design abilities, this competence also relies on knowledge in the area of media theories and technologies.
The masters program “Interactive Information Design” supports students in the phases of developing a media competence and finding a core area in visualization methods of digital and interactive media. You study in small groups of a maximum of 15 people with different backgrounds. Many students come from classic communication design, others from photography and industrial design. As with all masters’ specializations at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design, the program is planned to take four semesters – students are expected to use the fourth semester exclusively to write their thesis. Graduates will be able to work, for example, as information architects to develop strategies for the visualization and structuring of complex systems as experts. They are partners of the sciences concerning the mediation of content of complex research topics. Information designers publish in all media or stage interdisciplinary new locations of knowledge transfer, which connect, for example, museum exhibitions with experiential rooms.
